Sri Lanka has embarked on the process of conducting its 15th Population and Housing Census, with a significant technological upgrade. For the first time, computers will assist in the data collection process, according to a statement from the president's media office.

The last census took place in 2012, making this year's effort a crucial endeavor to gather comprehensive and up-to-date information about the population. The listing phase of the census began at the Presidential Secretariat, and it will be followed by the enumeration phase in 2024. The use of tablet computers, internet connectivity, and geo-spatial technologies is the standout feature of this census.

The method employed, known as Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), is being implemented for the first time in Sri Lanka. This advancement aims to streamline data collection and ensure accuracy. The Population and Housing Census involves a comprehensive tally of all individuals and existing residences within the country over a specific timeframe. This meticulous process guarantees that no person or dwelling is omitted or counted twice, providing reliable data for various purposes.

The census serves as the primary source of official data for obtaining population and housing information. It plays a vital role in shaping national policies, facilitating public administration, and enhancing understanding of demographics, ethnic distribution, and other social characteristics.

As part of the census, each building will be assigned a unique number, and GPS coordinates will be obtained for every structure. This will not only aid in data collection but also result in digitized maps at the village official division level, providing valuable geographical insights. To carry out this large-scale operation, approximately 16,000 enumerators will be recruited, all of whom will be government sector employees. Their role will be crucial in ensuring accurate data collection and adherence to the census guidelines.

The utilization of technology in the 15th Population and Housing Census marks a significant step forward for Sri Lanka, enabling more efficient and precise data collection. The results of this census will play a crucial role in shaping policies, planning for the future, and understanding the country's evolving demographics.
