Sri Lanka has extended US$1 million in humanitarian assistance to Nepal following devastating floods and landslides that have caused loss of life, displacement and widespread destruction.
President Anura Kumara Disanayaka has directed the Government to provide the financial contribution to support Nepal’s ongoing relief and humanitarian efforts.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives and suffering caused by the disaster, the President conveyed the condolences of the Government and people of Sri Lanka to Nepal, particularly to families who have lost loved ones.
Recalling the longstanding ties between the two countries, President Disanayaka said Sri Lanka stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal during this difficult period. The contribution will support immediate relief and humanitarian assistance for communities affected by the floods and landslides.
Earlier on Thursday, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath spoke with his Nepalese counterpart, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal, conveying Sri Lanka’s condolences, support and solidarity.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Government of Sri Lanka will remain closely engaged with Nepal and explore further avenues to support relief and recovery efforts.
