The Department of Meteorology has warned that heavy rainfall exceeding 100mm could occur in several parts of the island over the next few hours.

The warning will remain in effect from 5.00 p.m. today (November 7) until 1.00 a.m. tomorrow (November 8).

Accordingly, some areas in the districts of Kalutara, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, Badulla, Kandy, Matara, Monaragala, Ratnapura and Hambantota could experience rainfall exceeding 100mm.

The Department has warned that the heavy rainfall could trigger sudden flooding in roads and residential areas.

Wet road conditions and reduced visibility may also disrupt traffic, while isolated rockfalls and temporary interruptions to transport services are also possible.

People living in low-lying areas, river basins and landslide-prone locations have been urged to remain highly vigilant.

Drivers travelling through hilly areas have also been advised to exercise extra caution.

The public has been urged to closely monitor official weather warnings and forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology.
