Two civilians have been arrested in connection with a tense incident involving police officers and Buddhist monks near the Ruwanwelisaya in Anuradhapura.

Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wutler confirmed the arrests.

The incident occurred today (7) during a Satyagraha protest organised against the Anuradhapura Sacred City Development Plan.

Tensions erupted when police officers arrived at the site and attempted to remove the monks participating in the protest, along with civilians who had gathered in support of them.

The situation subsequently escalated into a confrontation between the two sides.
