The official handover ceremony was held today under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The families lost their homes when a landslide struck the Kabaragala area in March 2023. For nearly three and a half years, many of those affected had been living in difficult conditions at a closed tea factory in Makanda, Poonagala, while awaiting a permanent housing solution.
Implemented under the Government’s policy framework, “A Prosperous Country, A Beautiful Life,” the project aims to provide safe and permanent housing while improving the living standards of the plantation community.
Each of the 50 beneficiary families has received a 10-perch plot of land along with a fully completed house measuring approximately 550 square feet.
Each house comprises two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bathroom, and was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.2 million.
The total investment in the housing project is approximately Rs. 160 million.
The initiative is intended to give the displaced families not only secure housing and land ownership, but also an opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity and greater stability.
