Sri Lanka has recorded more than 56,000 dengue cases so far this year, while the number of confirmed dengue-related deaths has risen to 35, according to health authorities.

Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said 21,556 infections were reported during the month of June alone, highlighting a sharp increase in cases.

Amid the surge, the University of the Visual and Performing Arts in Colombo has been temporarily closed after around 30 students contracted dengue. The university and its hostels will remain closed until July 13.

Vice Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Professor Wasantha Liyanage, said dengue transmission has also increased in areas surrounding university hostels in Rajagiriya and Dehiwala.

Meanwhile, a three-day island-wide mosquito control programme got underway today under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government as part of efforts to curb the spread of the disease.

The Dengue Operations Centre established to receive public complaints and provide information on dengue prevention has received 207 complaints within the past week.

Dr. Kannangara said most complaints were related to stagnant water and mosquito breeding sites. Members of the public can report suspected dengue breeding locations or obtain information by calling the dedicated hotline 0117 966366.
