The Court of Appeal has scheduled for August 31 the hearing of a petition seeking the revocation of the parliamentary seat of Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna.

The Court of Appeal has scheduled for August 31 the hearing of a petition seeking the revocation of the parliamentary seat of Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna.

The petition, filed by Abhinawa Niwahal Peramuna Chairman Oshala Herath, was taken up before Court of Appeal Justice Mahen Gopallawa today (02).

During the proceedings, counsel for the petitioner requested that the matter be heard at an early date. Counsel appearing on behalf of MP Archchuna did not object to the request.

Accordingly, the Court fixed August 31 as the date for the hearing of the petition.

The petitioner claims that Ramanathan Archchuna was serving as a government medical officer at the time he was elected to Parliament, arguing that, under the Constitution, a public servant is not eligible to be elected as a Member of Parliament. The petition further contends that his election is therefore contrary to the law.
