Sri Lanka’s tourism earnings during the first five months of the year declined compared to the same period last year, according to the latest figures released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).

The Central Bank reported that tourism generated USD 1.36 billion in revenue between January and May this year, down from USD 1.543 billion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025. This represents a 11.9 percent decrease in tourism income.

Tourism earnings for May were also lower, with the country earning USD 155.7 million, compared to USD 164.1 million recorded in May last year.

Meanwhile, the CBSL said foreign worker remittances continued to show strong growth. Remittance inflows during the first five months of the year reached USD 3.91 billion, compared to USD 3.10 billion received during the same period last year.

The Central Bank noted that the increase in workers’ remittances helped offset part of the decline in tourism earnings during the period.
