Following the discussions, the Minister carried out an inspection of the airport to assess planned infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation, the meeting focused on key projects intended to meet the anticipated growth in passenger traffic. These include expanding terminal facilities, increasing passenger handling capacity, and improving the overall quality and efficiency of airport services.
A major component of the development programme is the expansion of Terminal 1, which will modernize arrival and departure areas, upgrade check-in and boarding systems, and improve immigration and transit facilities. The project is expected to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity by around 500,000.
The proposed Terminal 2 project was also discussed. The new terminal is expected to provide a modern passenger experience while strengthening the airport’s long-term capacity and bringing its services in line with international standards. Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2026, with completion expected within 30 months.
Officials said the planned developments are aimed at transforming Bandaranaike International Airport into a modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly aviation hub capable of supporting future growth in international air travel.
