The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that statements made by several individuals in the media regarding investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks have allegedly amounted to contempt of court.

The CID made this submission by filing a motion before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena on Monday (June 15).

According to the CID, remarks made by Dilith Jayaweera, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Sugishwara Bandara, Mahinda Pathirana, and Asanka Navaratne in various media forums have allegedly interfered with matters currently before the courts and constituted contempt of court.

Investigating officers further informed the court that an inquiry has already been launched into the incident and the relevant statements are being examined as part of the investigation.

The matter was brought to the attention of the court through a motion submitted by the CID, with further proceedings expected following the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.

No further details regarding the nature of the statements or any potential legal action against the individuals concerned were disclosed in court.
