The Sri Lanka Police have issued a special public warning regarding a cybercrime and extortion email network operating by fraudulently using the name and forged signature of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to information received by the Cyber Security and Open Source Investigation Unit of the Police Special Task Force (STF), a wide-ranging investigation has already been launched into the incident.

The Cyber Crime Coordination Centre of the Sri Lanka Police stated that the perpetrators are attempting to intimidate members of the public by sending threatening emails bearing the official name and a fake signature of the IGP in order to carry out extortion activities.

Authorities warned that such fraudulent activities could severely damage the reputation of the Sri Lanka Police and undermine public trust.

Police have therefore urged the public not to panic if they receive suspicious or threatening emails claiming to be from law enforcement officials. They also advised people not to respond to such messages or make any payments requested by the scammers.

Special emphasis has been placed on avoiding clicking any links contained in these emails, as they may pose serious cybersecurity risks.

The Sri Lanka Police further requested the public to immediately report any information related to such incidents to the nearest police station, the Computer Crimes Investigation Division, or the Police Special Task Force.

Reaffirming their commitment to public safety, police stated that every possible effort is being made to identify and apprehend those responsible for these fraudulent activities, while urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious
