The Department of Agriculture said the initiative will be carried out under the national agricultural programme “Isuru Genena Yalak” targeting the ongoing Yala cultivation season.
Director of Training and Projects Sisira Kumara stated that the programme is expected to be implemented across the island.
He explained that the initiative includes a series of practical programmes designed to educate farmers on fertiliser application based on soil testing, minimising the use of chemical fertilisers, increasing harvests with lower input costs and adopting modern technology to reduce labour expenses during the current economic challenges.
The program also aims to encourage the cultivation of crops such as cowpea, green gram, chili and onion in an effort to strengthen the rural economy and reduce the country’s dependence on imports.
