The Central Environmental Authority has warned that the use of polythene and plastic items for Vesak decorations and dansals is prohibited under existing environmental regulations, and violations are punishable by law.

In a statement issued ahead of Vesak celebrations, the Authority said several banned single-use plastic and polystyrene products continue to be used for Vesak lanterns, decorations and charitable events despite legal restrictions already in place.

The CEA said the sale, free distribution, display and use of items such as polythene lunch sheets, plastic cups, plates, spoons, forks, drinking straws and plastic garlands are banned under Gazette notifications issued in 2017 and expanded in 2023.

The Authority further noted that all types of polyethylene and polypropylene products used for decorations at religious, political, cultural and social events are also prohibited.

Officials warned that improper disposal of plastic and polythene waste causes severe environmental damage, including pollution of rivers and oceans, harm to animals and increased microplastic contamination affecting both humans and wildlife.

The CEA also cautioned against the open burning of plastic waste, saying it releases toxic gases that can lead to serious health complications.

The Authority urged the public to switch to environmentally friendly alternatives during Vesak celebrations and ensure responsible disposal of non-biodegradable waste to minimise environmental harm.
