Adverse weather conditions currently affecting several parts of Sri Lanka have resulted in one death and impacted dozens of families, according to the Disaster Management Centre.

The DMC stated that the fatality was reported from the Koralai Pattu South Divisional Secretariat Division in Batticaloa District.

The latest situation report issued by the DMC revealed that 17 Divisional Secretariat divisions across four districts have been affected by the ongoing severe weather situation.

A total of 203 people from 62 families have been impacted so far, while 17 individuals have been moved to temporary safe locations.

Authorities also reported that 39 houses have been damaged due to the prevailing conditions.

Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has issued a Red warning for heavy rainfall covering several areas of the island.

The department said the current rainy weather is expected to persist due to the low-pressure atmospheric system near Sri Lanka.

Very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is forecast for the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces, along with the districts of Galle District and Matara District.

Showers exceeding 100 mm are also likely in other parts of the country.

The public has been urged to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures against possible damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds and lightning.
