According to the Irrigation Department’s latest update issued at 10.00 a.m. today (13), the Lunugamwehera Reservoir was releasing 4,144 cusecs of water, while the Weheragala Reservoir was discharging 2,444 cusecs.
Authorities also opened gates at Yoda Wewa, Tissa Wewa and Weerawila tanks to control rising inflows caused by prevailing wet weather conditions.
The department said the increased rainfall experienced over the past few days had significantly raised water levels in reservoirs across the Southern Province, prompting precautionary spill operations.
Meanwhile, irrigation officials warned residents living in low-lying areas and near canals to remain vigilant due to the possibility of sudden rises in water levels downstream.
The Irrigation Department said several other reservoirs across the country were also spilling or releasing water, with continued showers expected in many parts of the island.
