Heavy rainfall experienced across several parts of the country has caused 16 major reservoirs and 17 medium-scale reservoirs managed by the Department of Irrigation to spill.

Director of Irrigation (Water Management), Engineer H.M.P.S.D. Herath, stated that the situation was reported as of 6.00 AM today (13).

According to the Department of Irrigation, reservoirs currently spilling include the Rajanganaya Reservoir in Anuradhapura District, Ambewela Reservoir in Badulla District, and the Mave Ara, Lunugamwehera, Tissa Wewa, Weerawila, Yoda Wewa and Weheragala reservoirs in Hambantota District.

The Abakola Wewa, Usgala Siyambalagamuwa, Magalla and Deduru Oya reservoirs in Kurunegala District are also spilling, while the Nalanda and Wemedilla reservoirs in Kandy District, Alikota Ara Reservoir in Monaragala District and Yoda Wewa in Mannar District have exceeded spill levels as well.

Meanwhile, irrigation authorities stated that 12 spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened, releasing more than 14,000 cubic feet of water per second into the Kala Oya.

In addition, six spill gates of the Lunugamwehera Reservoir have been opened to release over 4,100 cubic feet of water per second into the Kirindi Oya, while six spill gates of the Weheragala Reservoir are discharging more than 2,400 cubic feet of water per second into the Menik Ganga.

Authorities have advised residents in low-lying areas and communities living near rivers and waterways to remain alert due to the risk of rising water levels and possible flooding.
