The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka recently approved the electricity tariff revision for the second quarter of 2026 with effect from April 1.
Accordingly, electricity tariffs were increased by between 8% and 14.4%.
Against this backdrop, the National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd submitted a revised cost estimate for the second quarter to the PUCSL on April 27.
Authorities stated that the request for the tariff increase was made due to higher electricity generation costs caused by rising fuel prices.
However, the government has agreed in writing to provide a subsidy of Rs. 15 billion to the PUCSL in order to reduce the impact on electricity consumers.
As a result, the latest electricity tariff increase will not affect approximately 95% of electricity consumers in Sri Lanka.
There will be no tariff increase for domestic users consuming between 0 and 180 electricity units per month.
Households exceeding the 180-unit threshold will face higher charges depending on their electricity consumption levels.
Consumers using 210 units per month will see their electricity bill increase from Rs. 9,570 to Rs. 11,330, an increase of Rs. 1,760.
Meanwhile, the existing bill of Rs. 12,120 for consumers using 240 units has increased by Rs. 2,210, bringing the total to Rs. 14,330.
The PUCSL further stated that households consuming 270 units and 300 units will face increases of Rs. 2,660 and Rs. 3,110 respectively.
