Sri Lanka has launched a AUD 2 million (USD 1.4 million) recovery initiative to restore and transform vegetable production systems in the cyclone-affected districts of Nuwara Eliya and Badulla.

The programme is being implemented with the support of the Australia and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, aimed at assisting farmers to recover and rebuild their livelihoods.

The initiative was officially marked by the signing of a grant agreement between Matthew Duckworth, Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, and Vimlendra Sharan, FAO Representative for Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The project follows the widespread devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck the country in November 2025 and caused severe disruption to agricultural production systems and rural livelihoods.

The program is expected to focus on restoring vegetable farming activities, strengthening production systems, and enhancing resilience among affected farming communities, while supporting long-term sustainability in the agriculture sector within the targeted districts.
