The Parliamentary Women’s Caucus has decided to closely monitor the ongoing legal proceedings and the protection of the girl involved in the alleged sexual abuse incident reported from Anuradhapura.

The decision was taken during a meeting held in Parliament today (25) under the patronage of the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus and Minister, Saroja Savithri Paulraj.

Accordingly, a special discussion involving the Sri Lanka Police, the Attorney General’s Department, the National Child Protection Authority, the Department of Probation and Child Care Services, and other relevant institutions has been scheduled for June 5.

In addition to reviewing the Anuradhapura incident, the discussion is expected to broadly focus on strengthening laws and institutions required to prevent all forms of violence against women and children.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus has also decided to appoint a subcommittee to oversee future legal actions related to the case and to identify institutional and legal reforms needed to combat violence against women and children in the country.

The subcommittee will be co-led by Deputy Chairpersons of the Caucus, Members of Parliament Samanmali Gunasinghe and Chamindrani Kiriella.

Other members of the committee include MPs Hemali Weerasekara, Kaushalya Ariyarathna, Sagarika Athauda, Nilanthi Kottahachchi, Nilusha Lakmali Gamage, Thushari Jayasinghe, Anushka Thilakarathna, Hasara Liyanage, Hiruni Wijesinghe and Lakmali Hemachandra.
