Sri Lanka has recorded a significant increase in foreign remittances sent by migrant workers during the first quarter of 2026, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

From January to March 2026, the country received a total of USD 2.294 billion in remittances, marking a 26.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. In the first three months of 2025, remittances amounted to USD 1.815 billion.

Breaking down the 2026 figures:

January: USD 751 million

February: USD 729 million

March: USD 815 million

Officials attribute this steady growth to improved financial stability, transparency, and increased efforts to encourage migrant workers to use legal remittance channels.

Meanwhile, the Bureau also reported that 62,145 Sri Lankan workers left for overseas employment between January and the end of March this year.

The upward trend in remittances is seen as a positive indicator for the country’s foreign exchange inflows and overall economic recovery
