Sri Lanka has witnessed a significant rise in foreign remittances during the first quarter of 2026, with inflows increasing by 26.5% compared to the same period last year, according to the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

Citing data from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the Bureau reported that total remittances from migrant workers reached USD 2.294 billion between January and March 2026. This marks a notable increase from the USD 1.815 billion recorded during the first three months of 2025.

Monthly figures show that Sri Lanka received USD 751 million in January, USD 729 million in February, and USD 815 million in March this year.

The Bureau attributes this growth to improved public financial transparency and increased trust in the country’s financial system. Efforts to encourage migrant workers to use formal and legal channels for sending money home have also contributed to the rise in remittances.

Meanwhile, a total of 62,145 Sri Lankan workers left the country for foreign employment between January and the end of March 2026, reflecting continued demand for overseas job opportunities.
