The government has officially withdrawn tri-forces personnel assigned to protect former presidents starting today (December 23).
The decision was explained by Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala during a parliamentary session last week.
From now on, only police officers will handle the security of former presidents. The number of police officers assigned has also been reduced, but the government assured that enough officers will remain to ensure their safety.
The government plans to review the security arrangements for former presidents every six months and implement additional measures if necessary.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the safety of former presidents will not be compromised despite these changes.
The decision to reduce security personnel was made to lower the high costs of maintaining their protection.
