Congratulating the association on reaching the significant milestone, the Prime Minister praised its unwavering commitment to its founding mission of social service. She said the anniversary was not only a celebration of past achievements but also a tribute to the women who had devoted themselves to improving the lives of children and strengthening communities through voluntary service.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Amarasuriya stressed that a nation's progress depends on the equal and meaningful participation of women. She highlighted the importance of providing women with equal opportunities in education, the economy, community leadership, and public life to achieve sustainable development, stronger families, and a more inclusive society.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring equal access to quality education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and leadership for all women, enabling them to reach their full potential. She added that true welfare goes beyond short-term assistance and should empower individuals through education, skills development, protection, and opportunities to build secure and dignified lives.
She also emphasized the government's commitment to strengthening welfare systems that protect vulnerable communities while promoting empowerment and independence. Acknowledging the role of civil society organisations, Dr. Amarasuriya said governments formulate policies and provide public services, but community-based organisations remain essential in addressing many social challenges.
The Prime Minister noted that partnerships between organisations such as the Ceylon Moor Women's Association and state institutions play a vital role in enhancing child protection, empowering families, and building stronger communities.
During the ceremony, she honoured the association's lifetime members, recognising their dedication to nurturing confident young women and promoting leadership based on compassion, responsibility, and strong values. She said these qualities are essential as Sri Lanka advances towards sustainable development, inclusive economic growth, and national reconciliation.
A commemorative publication marking the association's 90th anniversary was also launched, with the first copy presented to Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.
The event was attended by Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih, Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savithri Paulraj, Western Province Governor Hanif Yusoof, Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar, ambassadors, officials and members of the Ceylon Moor Women's Association, and other invited guests.
