El Niño conditions are expected to persist until February, with heavy rainfall possible during October and November, Director General of the Department of Meteorology A.L.K. Wijemanne said.
He warned that the expected rainfall could lead to flooding and landslides in some areas.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Relief Services Centre said it remains prepared to provide further assistance to people affected by the dry weather conditions experienced in eight districts.
These developments were disclosed during a media briefing on the El Niño phenomenon held at the Government Information Department.
