The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider today (01) nearly 40 petitions challenging and supporting the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The 22nd Constitutional Amendment Bill was presented to Parliament by the government on August 18, following which the public was given an opportunity to file petitions before the Supreme Court.
The deadline for submitting petitions ended yesterday (31), with nearly 40 petitions filed both in support of and against the proposed amendment.
A five-member Supreme Court bench has been appointed to hear the petitions, headed by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena. The bench also comprises Justices Achala Wengappuli, Arjuna Obeyesekere, Sampath Abeykoon and Gihan Kulatunga.
The petitions are scheduled to be taken up for consideration from 10.00 a.m. today.
