Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has emphasized the important role of religious and cultural festivals such as the Bellanwila Esala Perahera in preserving Sri Lanka’s religious and cultural heritage for future generations.
The Prime Minister made these remarks while attending the 76th annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera held at the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya on August 15.
Highlighting the significance of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya in preserving Sri Lanka’s Buddhist, cultural and artistic heritage, Prime Minister Amarasuriya said an Esala Perahera is not merely a colourful cultural procession, but a living heritage that brings together religious beliefs, traditional dance, music, craftsmanship and community participation.
She noted that protecting such traditions is not simply about preserving the past, but also about creating opportunities for future generations to understand their cultural identity and carry these traditions forward.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of fostering respect for traditions and cultural heritage among children and young people. She emphasized the need to incorporate values taught by Buddhism, including compassion, loving-kindness, non-violence and coexistence, into everyday life.
She further stated that it is the government’s responsibility to provide the necessary support to ensure that the knowledge, skills and traditions of traditional artists are passed on to future generations.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya expressed her appreciation to the Chief Incumbent Thera and the Maha Sangha, the Dayaka Sabha, the organizing committee, traditional dancers, drummers and all artists who contributed to the successful organization of the Bellanwila Esala Perahera.
Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath, who also attended the event, said everyone has a responsibility to strengthen the Perahera and carry Sri Lanka’s Buddhist philosophy and culture forward.
He added that the government is prepared to provide the fullest possible support for this purpose, while noting that such cultural events make a significant contribution towards promoting religious and national unity and moving forward together as a nation.
Members of the Maha Sangha, including the Chief Incumbent of Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya, Minister Vijitha Herath, other public representatives, government officials and devotees were also present at the event.
