Easter Sunday Attack Investigations Enter New Phase, says the Government

Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, Ananda Wijepala stated in Parliament today ( January 7) that investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks have entered a new phase under the current government.

He stated that probes are being conducted into the findings revealed in the 2023 Channel 4 documentary on the Easter attacks and related investigations. Minister Wijepala confirmed that further legal proceedings would be based on the facts revealed up till now.

He highlighted that facts related to the case were reported to the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on November 11, 2024. 

So far, statements have been recorded from 48 individuals, including 12 civilian witnesses, 7 Army personnel, 24 police officers, and 3 prison officials.

Minister Wijepala also noted that 747 suspects were initially apprehended following investigations by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID).

Of these, 14 indictments have been filed by the Attorney General against 100 suspects, with further investigations still ongoing.
