Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) has issued a warning regarding a significant rise in the online theft of private information through fake websites in Sri Lanka.
Senior Information Technology Engineer Charuka Damunupola said that 2,542 complaints related to such incidents have been lodged with SLCERT so far this year, with 414 of these complaints specifically concerning fake websites.
Damunupola highlighted that this increase in online theft could be linked to the ongoing election season in Sri Lanka, as cybercriminals may exploit the situation to target unsuspecting individuals.
He urged the public to exercise caution and avoid sharing personal information, such as NIC numbers and bank details, on unverified websites.
