Ananda College Duo Wins Sri Lanka’s First Gold at Commonwealth Lifesaving Championship

The historic gold came in the 12.5m Line Throw event, a test of precision, teamwork, and rescue readiness. Their victory marks a milestone not just for Ananda College and Sri Lanka, but also for the wider South Asian region in competitive lifesaving sports.
The championships, conducted under the auspices of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) and the Commonwealth Games Federation, drew elite athletes from across the Commonwealth. This year’s event held special significance as it served as the final qualifying round for the upcoming World Games in China, where lifesaving is recognized as an official competitive sport.
"This win is a testament to years of dedication, training, and discipline," said a spokesperson from Ananda College. "We are incredibly proud of Hiruna and Meedum for putting Sri Lanka on the global lifesaving map."
Their gold-medal performance not only underscores Sri Lanka’s growing presence in aquatic sports but also paves the way for further international representation and participation in the World Games 2025.
As Sri Lanka celebrates this historic achievement, the nation now looks forward to supporting its lifesaving champions on the world stage in China later this year.
