The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a resolution to amend certain articles of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
The amendment specifically targets articles 30 (2), 62 (2), and 83 (b), which pertain to the terms of office for the President and Parliament.
The decision follows observations highlighting discrepancies between the tenure of the President and the duration of parliamentary terms as stipulated in the mentioned articles. Currently, Article 83 (b) allows for a presidential term exceeding six years, whereas the proposed amendment seeks to substitute this with a term not exceeding five years.
