Kohuwala Police reported yesterday that an unmarried elderly lawyer residing alone in a house in Kalubowila was found murdered in her bed, with her property stolen.

The deceased, identified as Chandani Satharasinghe, 64, of De Silva Road, Kalubowila, had been in contact with her brother living in Canada, the last conversation occurring on February 15, as revealed during police investigations.

A friend of the Canadian resident brother, residing in the Mirihana area, filed a complaint with Kohuwala Police upon being informed of the loss of contact with her after February 15.

Upon arrival at the house, police discovered the front gate locked, but the kitchen door partially open. Inside, they found the house in disarray, and in a room adjacent to the living room, the decomposed body of the lawyer covered with cloth.

Further investigations revealed that the assailant(s) had disconnected the electricity, murdered her on the bed, covered her body, and ransacked the house.

Mount Lavinia Acting Magistrate Ratna Gamage conducted the preliminary magisterial investigation and ordered the body to be placed in the morgue of Kalubowila Teaching Hospital for postmortem.

Kohuwala Police are conducting further investigations.
