Opposition MP exposes massive account transfer scam

Opposition MP Gamini Waleboda revealed in Parliament yesterday the operation of a significant scam involving the unauthorized transfer of funds from current and savings accounts to multiple other accounts without the account holder's knowledge. Online transaction users have reported money disappearing from their accounts without any prior notification.

Waleboda highlighted an incident where Rs. 1.1 million was transferred from a Buddhist monk's account in Balangoda, linking the scam to individuals trained in online transaction procedures by a specific institute.

He urged Parliament to escalate the issue to the Central Bank for investigation, citing approximately 1,000 affected accounts thus far.
