In a statement issued by the Sri Lanka Respiratory Disease Specialists' Association, President Dr. Neranjan Dissanayake highlighted Sri Lanka's prominence among nations grappling with asthma.

According to Dr. Dissanayake, approximately 10% to 15% of the population in Sri Lanka is affected by asthma, spanning across different age groups from children to the elderly, causing significant physical and mental distress.

Dr. Dissanayake emphasized the critical importance of proper asthma management, warning that uncontrolled cases could potentially lead to fatal outcomes.

He noted that a staggering 95% of asthma cases could be effectively managed with accessible and affordable medications.

Tragically, despite the availability of treatment, Dr. Dissanayake lamented that around 500,000 individuals worldwide succumb to asthma-related complications each year.

To raise awareness about the condition and its management, the Sri Lanka Respiratory Disease Specialists' Association has organized an awareness program scheduled for May 7, coinciding with World Asthma Day.

Dr. Dissanayake encouraged participation in the event to foster understanding and support for those affected by asthma in Sri Lanka and beyond.
