A businessman, adversely affected by the country's economic downturn, has issued a letter of demand seeking Rs. 50 million in damages from former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, former CBSL Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, and the Monterey Board for their alleged mishandling of the economic crisis.

The demand, sent through Attorney-at-Law Pramod Polpitiya, warns of legal action if the specified amount, including interest, is not paid within two weeks.

In his letter, businessman Kalinga Silva, who specializes in producing disposable surgical items, claims that between 2019 and 2022, he suffered significant losses due to economic mismanagement. He attributes his financial downturn to factors such as the depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US Dollar, restrictions on imported items, and frequent power cuts. Silva holds the named individuals responsible for these circumstances.

Moreover, Silva points to a Supreme Court judgment (SC FR 195/2022) which reportedly holds the aforementioned individuals accountable for mishandling the economic crisis, alleging a breach of the public trust vested in them.
