Joseph Stalin, the General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers' Union, has sounded the alarm on a critical shortage of teachers plaguing schools nationwide.

Addressing the media, Stalin highlighted the acute deficit, affecting provinces including the Western, Eastern, North-Central, Southern, and Uva.

According to reports cited by Stalin, the Western Province faces a staggering shortage of nearly 7,000 teachers, with the Eastern Province following closely behind with approximately 3,800 vacancies.

In the North-Central Province, 3,698 teaching positions remain unfilled, while the Southern and Central Provinces grapple with shortages of 3,100 and nearly 6,200 teachers, respectively.

Stalin accused the government of deliberately delaying teacher appointments as a cost-saving measure, exacerbating the crisis in the education sector.
