Two individuals, including a retired Sri Lanka Army Major, have been arrested for involvement in a financial scam promising jobs in the Russian Military.

The arrests were made by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) following reports of fraudulent activities.

According to the Police, the suspects are accused of fraudulently obtaining money from individuals by falsely promising them employment in the Russian army.

These arrests come amidst recent reports of Sri Lankans participating in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Last year, three Sri Lankans were reported killed while fighting for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.

In March this year, Al Jazeera reported that hundreds of Sri Lankans are serving with the Russian military in Ukraine. Many were enticed by lucrative salaries of up to $3,000 a month and the prospect of Russian citizenship, as revealed by Sri Lankans living in Russia.
