Tragedy struck as the wife of a District Judge in the Southern province died due to a heart attack, reportedly brought on by shock following an assault on her husband by her brother, a Police Sub-Inspector, sparked by a dispute over a cat.
The Sub-Inspector, stationed at Kalutara South Police Station, was apprehended by Akmeemana Police and later released on bail after appearing in Court for the assault on the District Judge.
Following a complaint lodged with the Police regarding the assault, Akmeemana Police disclosed that the wife of the District Judge, in a state of shock during the investigation, succumbed to a heart attack.
It was revealed that the district judge is married to the sister of the accused Sub-Inspector.
The incident occurred when the district judge and his wife visited their cat at the house in Galle where her mother resides, celebrating the New Year on April 13. However, upon their return on April 14, they discovered their pet cat missing and initiated a search.
During the search, an altercation ensued between the judge and his brother-in-law, leading to the Sub-Inspector slapping the judge.
The District Judge promptly reported the incident to Akmeemana Police, who responded with an investigative team. During questioning, the judge's shocked wife complained of chest pain. She was swiftly admitted to Galle Karapitiya Hospital, where doctors placed her in the intensive care unit. Sadly, despite medical efforts, she passed away due to a heart attack.
