In response to a concerning uptick in diarrheal disease cases among children, health officials are urging parents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) consultant pediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera highlighted the noticeable increase in cases, attributing it to the recent extended holidays where children tend to indulge in outside foods.
The symptoms, including frequent loose stools, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, have become prevalent among affected children. Dr. Perera emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if these symptoms arise in children.
Parents are advised to exercise caution in their children's dietary choices, being mindful of the potential risks associated with consuming food from external sources. Additionally, Dr. Perera cautioned about the prevalence of Typhoid fever among children, underlining the need for heightened awareness and preventive measures.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diarrheal disease stands as the second leading cause of death among children under the age of five, further underscoring the significance of proactive measures and early intervention in safeguarding child health.
