A vast stretch of the Katunayaka expressway has been shrouded in darkness, leaving motorists and commuters navigating through dimly lit conditions.

The malfunctioning of lamp posts along the highway, attributed to the theft of underground electric cables.

Toll gate officials shed light on the situation, revealing that the highway's streetlights have ceased to function due to the theft of electric cables.

The underground cables, crucial for powering the lamp posts, have been brazenly stolen, leaving sections of the expressway enveloped in darkness.

Officials recall a similar occurrence in January, where high-voltage electricity cables were stolen from the Katunayake expressway, resulting in a staggering loss of Rs. 286 million.

Furthermore, last year in January, thieves made off with wires worth Rs. 2.4 million from four lamp posts in the Wedikanda area, employing an axe to carry out their illicit activities.
