World's first Cinnamon Museum unveiled in Sri Lanka

A milestone in cultural heritage and culinary exploration was marked with the grand opening of the world's first Cinnamon Museum at the picturesque Mirissa Hills Estate in Henwalle, Mirissa. 

The inauguration, which took place last week on April 6th, witnessed the esteemed presence of Minister for Tourism Harin Fernando and Chairman of Mirissa Hills, Miles Young.Nestled within the breathtaking landscape of the Mirissa Hills Estate, envisioned by renowned architect C. Anjelandran, the museum promises an immersive journey through the captivating history, production, and significance of cinnamon. 

From its ancient origins in Egyptian embalming rituals to its contemporary applications in gastronomy and healthcare, visitors are offered a unique opportunity to unravel the enchanting tale of cinnamon.The museum, functioning as a comprehensive visitor center, offers guided tours and demonstrations showcasing the intricate process of cinnamon peeling. 

Moreover, guests can indulge in local cuisine amidst the lush surroundings, adding to the holistic experience.Miles Young, during his address, underscored the museum's pivotal role in not only educating visitors about the distinction between genuine cinnamon and its substitutes but also in celebrating the spice's timeless allure and romantic legacy. 

He remarked, "Cinnamon is an underexploited asset for tourism in Sri Lanka. Many visitors crave to know what it looks like but have nowhere to go. We will reveal the difference between true cinnamon and poor-quality substitutes. But we also reveal the world of romance and legend which makes this spice unique. The museum is a celebration of cinnamon but also a tribute to all those who work in the trade and sustain the agricultural economy of Sri Lanka."
