In response to mounting requests from state officials and the public, Home Affairs State Minister Ashoka Priyantha has confirmed that discussions are underway regarding the declaration of April 15 as a public holiday in light of the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
However, as of now, no official decision has been reached on the matter.
Speaking to the media, Minister Priyantha stated that while the proposal to designate April 15 as a public holiday has been put forward, the final determination rests with the Cabinet, which will convene to deliberate on the issue.
He emphasized that the decision-making process will involve consultations with other ministers and the President.
The call for April 15 to be recognized as a public holiday has gained momentum, with advocates citing the significance of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations for communities across Sri Lanka.
However, until a formal decision is made at the Cabinet meeting, the status of April 15 remains unchanged.
