The Colombo High Court has sentenced a 42-year-old father-of-two to life in prison after finding him guilty of possessing 6.17 grams of heroin with intent to distribute.
The verdict was announced by Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendige on 05.
The accused was apprehended by police in the Waththegedara area of Maharagama on 19 August 2019, along with 329 grams of heroin. However, analysis by the government analyst revealed that the net weight of heroin in the seized quantity was 6.17 grams.
Subsequently, the Attorney General pressed charges against the accused for possession and trafficking of heroin.
Following an extensive trial, the judge concluded that the prosecution had proven the charges against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt. Consequently, the judge handed down a sentence of life imprisonment for the accused.
