The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed its active involvement in assisting the families of the six Sri Lankans tragically murdered in Ottawa, Canada.
In a statement, the Ministry disclosed that it is in constant communication with the relatives of the victims residing in Sri Lanka, ensuring their needs are addressed while respecting their privacy.
The Sri Lankan High Commission in Ottawa relayed the devastating news of the deaths of six Sri Lankans, comprising a mother, four children, and a family acquaintance, at a residence in Barrhaven on March 7, 2024. The husband and father of the victims, found injured at the scene, is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital. Authorities have apprehended a 19-year-old Sri Lankan suspect in connection with the homicides, who remains in police custody.
Funeral arrangements for the victims will be conducted in accordance with their families' wishes after the completion of autopsies. The Ministry's Consular Affairs Division, in coordination with the Sri Lankan High Commission in Ottawa, is diligently working to support the victims' families in fulfilling necessary formalities.
A vigil to honor the victims has been organized at the crime scene, with a special vigil scheduled by the City Councilor for Saturday, March 9, 2024. High Commission officials have visited the surviving father and husband of the victims at the hospital, providing additional support during this difficult time.
The Ministry assured continued communication and assistance to the affected families, liaising with relevant Canadian authorities through the Sri Lankan High Commission to ensure all necessary measures are undertaken.
