The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has warned that prevailing El Niño weather conditions could increase electricity demand while reducing power generation capacity as water resources decline.
PUCSL Chairman K. P. L. Chandralal said the combination of higher demand and reduced hydropower generation could create a risk of electricity shortages in the country.
He made the remarks at a media briefing held today (24) on newly announced feed-in tariffs for electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
Chandralal also highlighted the need to strengthen battery energy storage capacity, noting that an estimated 450-megawatt requirement could arise as the country prepares to meet the expected shortfall during periods of reduced hydropower generation.
The PUCSL stressed that greater integration of renewable energy and adequate battery storage capacity would be essential to maintain grid stability and ensure a reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply.
The regulator has also introduced a framework covering renewable energy generation and battery energy storage systems as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity system.
