A significant portion of the Members of Parliament representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) have purportedly decided to abstain from attending a meeting with the representatives of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as convened by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
This revelation was made public today (March 09) by Tissa Attanayake, the National Organizer of the SJB.
Speaking at a press briefing held earlier today, MP Attanayake disclosed that while the party's stance on the matter would be formally communicated later, the majority of SJB MPs have opted not to participate in the scheduled meeting with the IMF delegation.
He highlighted that, similar to previous instances, the IMF representatives would engage in discussions with the opposition leader, reiterating the SJB's decision to abstain from any discussions initiated by President Wickremesinghe to garner support for the government's agenda.
President Wickremesinghe had extended invitations to leaders of opposition parties in Parliament for a dialogue with the IMF delegation on Monday (March 11), providing an opportunity to deliberate on the global lender's proposals.
The President's Media Division (PMD) had earlier announced that invitations were extended to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, National People's Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) leader S. Sridharan for their participation in these discussions.
