In a significant boost to the island nation's tourism industry, Sri Lanka has reported a remarkable 114 percent year-on-year increase in international tourist arrivals, according to the latest data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
The figures reveal that a total of 101,362 visitors explored the country during the corresponding period this year, compared to 47,355 in 2023.
The weekly arrival average stands at approximately 46,000, with a daily average of 6,700 visitors. This surge in tourism is a welcome development for Sri Lanka, which faced challenges in the past couple of years.
Priantha Fernando, Chairman of SLTDA, expressed his enthusiasm for the positive trend. "Not only are the tourism arrival numbers increasing, but revenue is also on the rise. This performance boost is a significant boon for the industry," he stated, highlighting the positive impact of the reimposed Minimum Room Rate (MRR) for Colombo city hotels.
Fernando explained that the MRR facilitated an increase in prices across the country, contributing to a rise in revenue. According to feedback from hoteliers, December recorded the highest service charge month since the onset of the pandemic, and Fernando is confident that this positive trend will continue into 2024.
M. Shanthikumar, President of The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL), hailed the performance as a "big achievement" despite ongoing industry challenges. He urged increased promotional efforts, especially in the digital space, to sustain the momentum.
The Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) also expressed optimism, noting that the winter season holds promising prospects for Sri Lanka's tourism. Industry sources reveal that hotels across the island are operating at approximately 75 percent occupancy, with healthy bookings extending into March.
The Russian Federation leads the pack in terms of tourist traffic for January, accounting for 16 percent of total arrivals. India follows closely behind with a 15 percent share, while the United Kingdom claims the third spot with 8 percent. Other key markets contributing to Sri Lanka's tourism resurgence include Germany, China, France, and Australia. With the current positive trajectory, stakeholders in the industry are hopeful for a thriving year ahead.
