As the festive season approaches, local residents are facing a concerning surge in the prices of essential commodities, with eggs, chicken, and onions witnessing significant hikes in the market.

Despite the imposition of Maximum Retail Prices (MRP) on eggs, reports suggest that they are currently being sold at rates ranging between Rs. 55 and Rs. 65, causing distress among consumers. The cost of chicken has also experienced a rapid increase, with vendors hinting at the possibility of further price hikes in the near future.

In another blow to consumers' wallets, a kilogram of onions is now priced at a staggering Rs. 440 in the local market, adding to the financial burden for households during this festive season.

In response to the escalating situation, the Committee on Ways and Means has taken action, instructing the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to promptly implement measures to collect overdue taxes from entities that have allegedly reaped undue profits in the recent importation of wheat flour and sugar. The move aims to address concerns about unfair practices and stabilize commodity prices in the market.
