Sri Lankan young athlete Ayomal Akalanka has won the silver medal in the men’s 400m hurdles event at the Asian Under-23 Athletics Championships, setting a new Sri Lankan national record in the process.

Akalanka completed the race in an impressive time of 49.03 seconds, breaking the previous national record that had stood for 26 years.

The former Sri Lankan record was held by veteran athlete Harijan Ratnayake, who clocked 49.44 seconds on August 31, 2000, at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Akalanka’s outstanding performance marks a historic achievement for Sri Lankan athletics as he surpassed one of the country’s longest-standing records. The Asian Under-23 Athletics Championships are currently being held in China.
