The Government has revised the gazette notification governing sugar content labeling for liquid food products, introducing stricter thresholds for the mandatory colour-coded front-of-pack labeling system.

The amended gazette, issued under the signature of Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa, revises the sugar content limits used to classify beverages under the red, amber, and green colour codes.

Under the new requirements:

Red: Products containing more than 8 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters must display a red logo. The previous threshold was 11 grams per 100 milliliters.

Amber: Products containing 2.5 to 8 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters must display an amber logo.

Green: Products containing less than 2.5 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters will qualify for the green logo.

The revised gazette also introduces updated labeling requirements, making it mandatory for liquid food products to display the appropriate colour-coded logo on their packaging in accordance with the amended schedule.

The changes are aimed at providing consumers with clearer nutritional information while encouraging healthier beverage choices by tightening the sugar content thresholds used in the national labeling system.
