Despite Ireland producing a stunning six-wicket victory over the West Indies, Sri Lanka's hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup were dashed on Saturday as an inferior net run rate ended their campaign.

Sri Lanka entered the final day of Group B fixtures needing Ireland to defeat the West Indies while also relying on favourable net run rate calculations. Although Ireland delivered the upset, the result was not enough to lift Sri Lanka into the last four.

Ireland restricted the West Indies to 128 for 7 after opting to bowl first, with Cara Murray and Aimee Maguire claiming two wickets each to keep the Caribbean side in check. In reply, Orla Prendergast starred with an impressive 63 off 44 balls, striking eight fours and two sixes as Ireland comfortably chased down the target, reaching 129 for 4 with 11 balls to spare.

The victory confirmed England and the West Indies as the two semi-finalists from Group B, while Sri Lanka finished third despite recording their best-ever group-stage performance at a Women's T20 World Cup. Led by captain Chamari Athapaththu,

Sri Lanka secured three victories in the group stage for the first time in the tournament's history. However, heavy defeats earlier in the competition left them with a net run rate they could not recover, bringing their impressive campaign to a disappointing end.
